Mary deLima “Nan” Getz R.N. 85, a 57 year resident of Aston died September 24 at Riddle Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Getz was born in Chester the daughter of the late Philip and Hannah nee Desmond Leonard. She attended Immaculate Heart of Mary School, St. Robert High School and graduated from Notre Dame High School. She also graduated from St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing in Wilmnigton. She was employed as a nurse at Westinghouse for 20 years retiring in 1983. Mrs. Getz was a girl scout leader in Aston and also a founding member of Aston AA Auxillary and a member of St. Joseph Church. more…
Carmellina “Marlina” Mazza, of Wallingford, died Sept. 15 at Crozer Chester Medical Center. Miss Mazza was born in Chester, the daughter of the late Gaetano and Annunziata “Nancy” (nee Cardillo) Mazza. She graduated from St. Anthony School and Chester High. Following high school, Miss Mazza went to New York to begin a career as a vocalist using the stage name Marlina Karr. Miss Mazza performed with Martin and Lewis, the Caruso Band and Vic Damone. Her final engagement was at the 500 Club in Atlantic City performing with Frank Sinatra. Her brothers Joseph on bass and Frank on guitar along with Carmen Carvallero on piano provided backing. more…
Philomena D. Olenik, 82, of Chester died September 10 at Shore Memorial Hospital Somers Point, NJ. Mrs. Olenik was born in Chester the daughter of the late Bernard and Rosa nee Citerone and was a life long city resident. She attended Chester Schools and graduated from Chester High School. After graduating Mrs. Olenik worked for Acme Markets as a cashier. In her younger years, she bowled with the St. Robert’s Bowling League and was active with the Girl Scouts at St. Robert’s. more…
Alma Bakia, 87, a 52 year resident of Wallingford died September 8 at Fair Acres Geriatric Center. Mrs. Bakia was born in Chester the daughter of the late Benjamin and Daisy nee Mohler Italia and was a graduate of Nether Providence High School. Mrs. Bakia was employed for 35 years as a receptionist in the office of Dr. Eugene Kane an Optometrist. She also owned and operated Alma’s Flower Shop in Chester after graduating from high school. more…
