Edward J. McGovern
Edward J. McGovern, 79, of Swarthmore, a retired partner and management consultant with Deloitte-Touche, died, with family at his side, from complications of Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s at Taylor Hospital on December 11, 2009.
Mr. McGovern was born and raised in the Bronx of Irish immigrant parents. He was always proud of his heritage and his home town. After graduation from Manhattan College, he served in the Army during the Korean War where he worked on early computer systems. He continued his career working with computers at the B&O Railroad and then at Univac, before starting with the accounting firm Deloitte-Touche as a management consultant.
In 1960, Mr. McGovern married Alice Hally. They moved with their family to Swarthmore in 1966. He was made partner of Deloitte-Touche in 1971, and went on to become the Managing Partner for the consulting business for the Eastern Region until his retirement in 1987.
Mr. McGovern traveled the world both professionally and personally. He especially treasured the numerous trips he and his family made to Ireland to visit their relatives. Mr. McGovern lived his life enthusiastically, whether he was dancing, skiing, dabbling in art or debating politics. He also enjoyed golf and a was member of Rolling Green Golf Club in Springfield.
In addition to his wife, Mr. McGovern is survived by his two daughters, Patricia McGovern Cronin (Kevin) and Mary Alice Kirk (Kevin), his son, Edward McGovern, (Katherine), his sister, Delores Skea. “Pop Pop” was much beloved and will be greatly missed by his seven grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, December 15 at St. John Chrysostom Church, 617 South Providence Road, Wallingford at 11am, with a visitation at the church from 10 am to 11 am.
